Piet Mondrian

Detail of Composition with Red, Yellow, and Blue Print with Hanger

About the artist

1872–1944 · Dutch · De Stijl

Piet Mondrian (1872–1944) was a Dutch painter who began with landscapes and flower studies in the tradition of the Hague School, worked through Cubism in Paris from 1912, and arrived at a strict abstraction of black lines, white grounds and the three primary colours. In 1917 he was a founder of the De Stijl group with Theo van Doesburg, and he called his approach Neo-Plasticism. He lived in Paris and London before moving to New York in 1940, where he died in 1944.

We show Mondrian's route as well as where it led: a Dutch field and a single chrysanthemum beside the 1921 lozenge and the grids of 1927 and 1935. Hanger, acrylic and metal prints, cushions and blankets keep the full composition as the museum photographed it, set on white.
